Interesting Historical Facts: While attempting to conquer Italy especially Rome, Hannibal won many decisive encounters including the Battle of Trebia, the Battle of Trasimene and the Battle of Cannae. Hannibal secured the loyalty of several allies of Rome. Hannibal kept his military in Italy for 17 years. Hannibal never had a battle defeat of his own while in Italy. Eventually, Rome decided not to fight Hannibal at all in order to avoid defeat. In 211 BC, Hannibal's greatest military mistake was the inability to end the siege of Capua.
This failure was extremely important for Rome. As brilliant as Hannibal was, he could never actually defeat Rome and make them accept peace with Carthage. As a new strategy, Rome took the war to North Africa against Carthage itself. Hannibal abandoned Italy to save Carthage. However, Scipio Africanus defeated Hannibal at the Battle of Zama. The Second Punic War lasted from 218 BC to 201 BC. This war ended with Rome as the victor over both Hannibal and Carthage.
A more in depth study of the life of Hannibal of Carthage is needed to understand the full impact Hannibal had on world history. By tormenting and terrorizing Italy for over fifteen years, Hannibal eventually gave rise to the Roman Empire and the permanent destruction of the Carthaginian society. If Hannibal could have seen the future, he would have immediately marched on the city Rome after entering Italy and gone to his death in an all out and full effort trying to destroy Rome.
Instead, Hannibal killed hundreds of thousands of Romans and their allies and so massively enraged Rome that the Romans wiped out Carthage the first chance they were given. The Romans so thoroughly ended Carthage forever and ever that we in fact have no written records from Carthage about Hannibal himself. The actions of Hannibal make him the most important and influential individual of the B.C. era before the rise of Christianity. If Hannibal had annihilated Rome, the history of Western Civilization would have been altered in ways unfathomable and shocking to us.
The Carthaginian Empire would have likely been the dominant power of the Mediterranean with the end of Rome and our present day religious beliefs would be something strange and exotic because the Roman Empire was responsible for Christian thought eventually controlling the West from a religious standpoint. In the end, perhaps we should greatly loathe Hannibal for the way he unwittingly altered the course of Human history. As a merciless slayer of his adversaries, Hannibal was the Adolf Hitler of his times although so many centuries have elapsed since Hannibal roamed Italy that current military historians don't remember Hannibal for who he truly was.
